DRIFTING FISH

DRIFTING FISH is an imaginative children’s theatre production exploring the deep relationship between a mother and her children. Centered on themes of love, support, and resilience, it invites young audiences to discover their voices while navigating life’s infinite possibilities.

Serving as a companion piece to my earlier work, DRIFT, this production focuses on messages I wish to convey to the next generation.

The story is about a little boy and his new pet, a little fish. One day, the little fish had lost its mouth. The boy decided to accompany the little fish and began a journey to find its mouth. Along the way, they experienced a water pipe adventure, a mouth shop searching, and a noisy world of mouths. Finally, they found a ‘perfect mouth’ which made the little fish ‘a normal, ordinary fish’. Unfortunately, a water tornado swept away its new perfect mouth. The little fish was very sad because without a mouth, it couldn’t even make a sound when it cried. The boy hugged it, wanting to let it know: things will get better, even if it takes time; I will always be by your side.

“When you’re happy, I love you. When you’re sad, I love you too. You are always my treasure.”

The production will blend various artistic mediums, including puppetry, shadow, physical theatre, live projection, and Cantonese songs accompanied by the Chinese traditional instrument: guzheng.

Collaborators

Live Musician, Sali Wong, who will be playing the guzheng in DRIFTING FISH.

The Video Designer on DRIFTING FISH is Wilfred Wong, who formed experimental art group HerStory Polygon, whose works were performed across the globe including Scotland, Macau, Japan, China and more.

DRIFT

Have you ever felt lost, far away from home?

How long has it been since you left?

Do you still long for where you came from, or are you still searching for the place where you belong?

Drift is a story of the past, present, and future. Three generations of women caught in a current of fate: the ripples caused by her mother’s passage, to her own journey, and the path yet to be taken by her daughter.

Like a fish drifting through water, she moves as if led by something greater.

Drift weaves together live music, video, puppetry, physical theatre and dance to tell a mesmerising story about identity, memory, and belonging.

Commissioned by Lowry and Horizons Collective and supported by New Earth Theatre. Funded by Arts Council England.
