Plastic China

By Anna Nguyen. Directed By Nickie Miles-Wildin.
Performed at Location 3 : Covered walkway at Central Library and Town Hall Extension

Inspired by the documentary 'Plastic China' Yi-Jie is an unschooled 10 year old girl whose family works and lives on a plastic waste recycling plant. She rarely leaves the plant and learns about the outside world mostly through the waste that is transported to the plant; from the royal wedding to the latest deals on five star resorts, Yi-Jie lives her happiness and sorrows on the waste.

She is restless and yearns to break away from the plant. She is a visionary and can taste the possibility of a better life, unlike her father who finds it hard to imagine life beyond the plant. On one of her family trips into the big city she passes by a missionary, promoting free schooling and sees this as her opportunity to break away from the plant. However with a father who sees no value in education, a sick mother and a huge stack of responsibilities on the plant will Yi-Jie leave to pursue her dreams?
